Kansas City is centrally located, making it easy to reach by plane, car, or train. The new Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is clean, modern, and surprisingly easy to navigate. From the airport, it’s about a 25-minute drive to downtown or the Plaza.

Start your day with a great cup of coffee. Kansas City has one of the best coffee scenes in the Midwest and locals take it seriously. You’ll find everything including rooftop cafés and cozy neighborhood bakeries. Pick a spot that fits your taste.
Morning Coffee and Light Breakfast Options
- McLain’s Market – A must visit local favorite and my go-to spot! Known for its chocolate croissants, pepperjack burrito, drip coffee from Sway Roasters, and inviting atmosphere. Several locations across the metro.
- Messenger Coffee Co. – Big windows, a rooftop patio, and an on-site roastery give this place a big city feel. Pair your espresso with something fresh from Ibis Bakery on the main floor.
- The Roasterie Factory Café – Try the signature Honeycomb Latte and take the factory tour if you have time. A fun pick for anyone who likes to see how things are made.
Post Coffee Stops
- Union Station – Walk through the historic grand hall and grab a few photos. The model train exhibit is free and surprisingly captivating, for both adults and kids.
- Liberty Memorial and WWI Museum Grounds – Just outside Union Station, climb the hill to reach Liberty Memorial for one of the best skyline views in Kansas City. You can stop here just for the photo or plan to explore the full museum later in the day.
💡 Local Tip: The KC Streetcar runs from the Plaza through downtown and into the River Market. It is free, easy to use, and a great way to explore without needing a car.

- National WWI Museum and Memorial – One of the most impressive museums in the country with powerful exhibits and an unforgettable view from the tower. Even the exterior plaza is worth a stop, offering great views.
- Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and American Jazz Museum – Located side by side in the historic 18th and Vine District. These two museums tell the story of Kansas City through sports, music, and resilience.
- Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art – Free to enter and full of world class works. The giant shuttlecocks on the lawn are iconic and the indoor galleries cover everything from European classics to Japanese ceramics.
- Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art – Next door to the Nelson and also free. Great for modern art fans. Grab lunch in their cafe.
- The Money Museum – Located inside the Federal Reserve Bank. Free and interactive with hands-on exhibits and shredded money souvenirs. Note: This museum is not open on weekends!

- BBQ Icons: Joe’s Kansas City (go to the original gas station location if you can), Jack Stack, or Q39 if you’re closer to midtown.
- Sit Down and Scenic: Grunauer for authentic German food, Brown and Loe in River Market or Gram and Dun on the Plaza both offer elevated menus with a great atmosphere.
- Kid-Friendly Picks: Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant in Crown Center delivers your food by train. It’s a hit with little ones and easy walking distance from Union Station.

If you’re lucky enough to have three or more days in Kansas City, take the opportunity to explore some of the charming small towns and scenic spots just outside the metro. These easy day trips offer a different pace and a deeper look at the region’s history, food, and culture.
Weston, Missouri
📍 45 minutes north of Kansas City
Weston is one of my favorite day trips from KC! This small river town has some of my favorite hiking trails at Weston Bend State Park. Afterward, stop by Pirtle Winery and Holladay Distillery for tastings and tours. Weston’s Main Street has antique shops, handmade goods, and the old school general store. In fall, the leaves are spectacular and apple festival is a seasonal favorite.
Lawrence, Kansas
📍 45 minutes west of Kansas City
Home to the University of Kansas, Lawrence offers a creative, college town energy with lots of local charm. Spend time on Massachusetts Street for shopping, bookstores, coffee shops, and live music venues. The Spencer Museum of Art and KU Natural History Museum are both worth a visit if you love museums without the crowds. I lived in Lawrence for a couple years and love all of their coffee shops and unique restaurants along Mass Street.
Excelsior Springs, Missouri
📍 40 minutes northeast of Kansas City
Known for its historic mineral springs, Excelsior Springs makes a great retreat for couples. Book a spa appointment at The Elms Hotel or enjoy wine tasting at Fence Stile Winery. The downtown area has a walkable mix of boutiques and historic architecture, making it a relaxed, easygoing escape.
💡 Local Tip: These towns are great options if you’re planning a longer Kansas City road trip. Each has enough to fill a full day, and all three have seasonal festivals or events worth checking before you go.

- First Fridays in the Crossroads (monthly) – Street performers, open galleries, food trucks, and a packed arts district. Great energy and completely free!

- Grinter Farms Sunflower Fields (late August to early September) – A stunning sea of sunflowers just outside Kansas City and one of the area’s most beloved seasonal photo spots. Best of all, it’s completely free!
- St. Dionysios Greek Fest in Overland Park (June) – My favorite KC-area festival for tasty Greek food, pastries, dancing, and live music under one festive roof.
Sporting Events in Kansas City
- Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium – Tailgating here is legendary. Book tickets early, especially in fall.
- Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium is family friendly with a laid back vibe. Look for Friday night fireworks.
- Sporting KC – Soccer fans love the stadium energy in Kansas. Easy to access with good local eats nearby.
- KC Monarchs – An independent league baseball team playing in a fun, casual setting. Monarchs games are one of my favorite things to do in summer!
- KC Current at CPKC Stadium – The first stadium built specifically for women’s soccer with electric energy and great riverfront views.

Parking
- Union Station and Crown Center have large garages with validated or affordable parking.
- Plaza and Westport offer a mix of street parking and small lots. Parking is mostly free in these areas.
- Download the ParkKC app for easy payment at downtown and Rivermarket meters.
What to Pack
- Wear layers. Kansas City weather changes quickly.
- Bring comfortable shoes for exploring museums, parks, and mural alleys.
- For fall and winter visits, pack a warm coat and plan for wind.

Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains. With more than 200 fountains across the metro, KC has one of the highest concentrations of fountains in the world. Only Rome has more fountains.
The city sits on a state line. Part of Kansas City is in Missouri and part is in Kansas. Many first-time visitors don’t realize they’ll likely cross state lines several times in a single day.
Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, was born and raised just outside Kansas City in Independence, where his presidential library and museum remain a major local landmark.
