South Padre Island has been part of my story for a long time. I grew up visiting nearly every summer, so this isn’t just another beach destination to me, it is one I have returned to again and again.

I have visited in different seasons, including a trip this past December between Christmas and New Year’s. It reminded me there are still plenty of things to do in South Padre Island in winter.

Over the years, I have realized something that still surprises people. South Padre Island is one of the best beach getaways in the US, and it often flies under the radar.

The beaches here are clean, easy to access, and perfect for a laid back day in the sun. One of my favorite things that sets this spot apart is the shelling. I still find myself walking the shoreline looking for shells like I did as a kid.

It is also incredibly family friendly, with a mix of relaxing beach time and unique activities like visiting sea turtles or seeing detailed sand sculptures up close.

If you are planning a trip, there are so many things to do in South Padre Island that go beyond just lying on the beach. In this post, I’ll walk you through the Must See spots and experiences you should not miss.

Must See Spots in South Padre Island

These are the places I make time for every visit. If it is your first trip, start here because these are the Must See spots that give South Padre Island its personality beyond the beach.

1. Visit Sea Turtle Inc

One of the most unique experiences on the island is visiting Sea Turtle Inc. This nonprofit focuses on rehabilitating injured sea turtles, and it is one of those places that sticks with you long after your trip.

They also have a few resident turtles that you can see up close.

If you can, plan your visit around feeding time. It is the best way to see the turtles active and really understand the care that goes into helping them recover.

2. Explore Sand Castle Village

This is one of the most unexpected and fun stops on the island.

Sand Castle Village showcases incredibly detailed sand sculptures that are hard to believe were made by hand. It is free to visit, or you can leave a small donation.

If you want to take it a step further, you can book a hands on sandcastle building class. It is a fun activity for families, couples, or anyone who wants to try something different at the beach.

3. Spend Time at Isla Blanca Park

For a more structured beach day, Isla Blanca Park is worth the small entrance fee.

This area is well maintained and makes everything easy. You will find plenty of parking, clean bathrooms, and a more organized setup compared to some of the free access points.

There is also a 1.5 mile walking trail, which is a nice break from just sitting on the beach. It is a great place to mix in a walk, relax by the water, and spend a full afternoon without needing to move around.

The large Jesus statue near the entrance serves as a landmark and is associated with local fishing culture and those lost at sea.
