I visited Basel as a day trip from Zurich, just about an hour away, while spending time with friends who live there. Basel’s position at the crossroads of Switzerland, France, and Germany adds an international touch.

Start at Barfüsserplatz, one of the city’s main hubs and a popular first stop. The market sits in front of Barfüsserkirche, a former Gothic church with a sandstone façade. It creates a beautiful backdrop for wooden chalets and passing trams. While slightly smaller than the other markets, it still offers plenty of stalls selling gifts, ornaments, and Swiss favorites like raclette and mulled wine.
From here, it’s less than a 10 minute walk to Münsterplatz, set beside the impressive Basel Minster. Cathedral views and glimpses toward the Rhine make this one of the most scenic locations in the city. This market focuses on traditional handcrafted goods and has a more open and spacious layout.
If you have extra time, cross the Rhine to Claraplatz in Kleinbasel. Lined along Clarastrasse, this market feels more like a festive shopping street, with stalls mixed in among local shops and cafés. One of the best things about visiting Basel at Christmas is how easy it is to explore nearby countries and markets. With France and Germany just across the border, several festive destinations are within easy reach by train.
Colmar is about 45 minutes away and is known for its storybook streets and multiple themed markets. Strasbourg is just over an hour away and is often called the Capital of Christmas, with one of Europe’s oldest and largest markets. For a German style experience, Freiburg im Breisgau is less than an hour away and offers a cozy Old Town setting and traditional Black Forest atmosphere.
