Planning a trip to the Christmas markets and wondering what to wear to stay warm in a European or US winter? You are in the right place. As someone who has traveled to multiple Christmas markets throughout Europe & US, I have tested many winter clothing pieces, shoes, and travel accessories in real market conditions.

These are my go to favorites in clothing, shoes, and travel accessories that made exploring the markets easy, warm, and enjoyable. 🎄

What to Wear for Christmas Markets

What you wear can make or break your Christmas market experience. These are my go to pieces that kept me warm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy every moment outside.

Eddie Bauer Polar Fleece Lined Pants with Zipper pockets

I wore these fleece lined pants nearly every day to the Christmas markets. They are warm, and the zipper pockets helped me keep my phone and keys secure.

Columbia Firecamp Fleece Lined Hiking Shoe

These lightweight hiking shoes keep my feet warm thanks to their fleece lining. The sturdy sole is perfect for navigating cobblestone streets, especially when they are damp.

Columbia Firecamp Fleece Lined Hiking Boot

These lightweight hiking boots keep my feet warm with their fleece lining!  They are waterproof, which keeps your feet dry if there is snow or rain.  The rugged sole is good on the cobblestone streets especially when they are damp.

Rechargeable Hand Warmers

These hand warmers are like a hidden secret.  Keep them in your pockets or inside your gloves.  They are rechargeable, have 3 heat settings, and a long battery life.

Merino Wool Socks

I love Merino Wool socks for the warmth, comfort, and breathability.  These over the calf designs work well for both tennis shoes and hiking boots!

Columbia Women’s Newton Ridge Waterproof Hiking Boot

I also keep a pair of these on hand for days when I don’t need the fleece lining but still want waterproof protection and solid traction on the cobblestone streets. Several colors to choose from!

Thermal Leggings by Champion

On days when I want to wear jeans or dress up a bit, I reach for the thermal leggings from Champion. They come in three different warmth levels, so it’s easy to pick the right pair for the weather.

Carry-On Luggage

If you are traveling with a carry on for your Christmas market trip, this is a great option that fits easily under the seat. It also gave me plenty of room for all the souvenirs I picked up, so I could bring everything onto the plane with me.

40L Travel Backpack

This backpack opens like a suitcase and fits easily under the seat in front of me. It has a handy laptop pocket and includes three packing cubes. I use it as my carry on, and it always surprises me how much it can hold.

Venture Pal Day Pack Backpack

I loved this ultralight backpack traveling because it folds into its own pocket and takes up almost no space. It is made from water resistant and tear resistant material, so it handles winter weather well. The compartments make it easy to organize your phone, gloves, snacks, and souvenirs, and even though it is very light, it still has plenty of room for layers or small gifts. It is a practical and affordable choice for day trips, flights, and exploring the Christmas markets.

Essential Travel Accessories for Christmas Market Trips

The right travel accessories can make winter trips and Christmas market visits much easier. These essential items help you stay organized, comfortable, and prepared for full days of exploring.

Universal Travel Adapter

This compact travel adapter works in more than 150 countries, including all of Europe, the UK, Japan, China, and Australia. It’s the only one you’ll need no matter where you go.

Inflatable Neck Pillow

I spent a long time searching for a neck pillow I actually liked, and I finally found it. Since it’s inflatable, it barely takes up any space, and the higher design gives my head a comfortable place to rest while the front stays open around my neck. The built-in privacy hood and travel pouch are thoughtful extras I really appreciate.

Anker Portable Charger

This small charger was great to have on hand. It holds its charge for a long time, powers devices quickly, and I love that it doesn’t drain when it’s not in use. The digital display showing the remaining battery life is an added bonus.

Apple AirTag

Apple AirTags are one of my favorite travel essentials. They let you track your luggage or backpack right from your phone. If your bag gets delayed or misplaced, you can see exactly where it is in the Find My app. They are small, lightweight, and incredibly reliable, making them a simple but powerful tool for stress-free travel. Android Users will like these highly rated air trackers.

Leak Proof Silicone Travel Bottles Set

Spill proof travel bottles are a game changer for keeping your toiletries organized and mess free. This set includes twenty one pieces in a variety of sizes, and the silicone containers are leak proof, easy to fill, and TSA approved.

Final Thoughts

Christmas markets are some of the most magical places to visit, and having the right gear helps you enjoy every moment. Pack smart, stay warm, and leave a little extra room in your suitcase for the gifts, ornaments, and market souvenirs you’re guaranteed to fall in love with.

Most of all, soak it all in. Sip the mulled wine, wander the twinkling streets, listen to the music, and savor the atmosphere. These trips go by quickly, but the memories (and the souvenirs) last for years. Have a great trip!
