Kansas City Coffee Guide: 10 Must-Visit Coffee Shops from a Local

Coffee has always been more than a drink to me. It’s a ritual, a way to connect with others or take a moment for myself, and honestly, one of my favorite parts of any day. At one point, I even dreamed of opening my own coffee shop. While that path didn’t end up being the one I followed, my love for discovering great coffee has only grown.

I’ve explored cafés all over the country and abroad, but there’s something special about finding great coffee and coffee shops close to home. I’ve lived in Kansas City for 27 years, visited lots of different coffee shops around town, and seen some come and go. What I have found is a creative, welcoming, and ever-evolving coffee scene full of exceptional coffee experiences.

These are ten of my personal favorite Kansas City coffee shops plus a couple bonus coffee experiences! From North Kansas City coffee shops, downtown cafes, and some of the best Kansas City coffee roasters, this list has something for every coffee lover.

If you’re short on time and only have room for one stop, make it McLain’s or The Roasterie. You’ll see why soon.

Let’s grab a cup and explore.

Top 10 Must-Visit Kansas City Coffee Shops

These are the Kansas City coffee shops I find myself returning to again and again. Some are perfect for a quick stop, while others invite you to slow down and stay awhile. Each one offers something special.

1. McLain’s Market – Local Favorite with a Bakery Bonus

Locations: Waldo, Shawnee, South Overland Park, North Kansas City, just off 435 in Overland Park

If you only have time for one coffee shop in Kansas City, I highly recommend McLain’s. I go here often, and it never disappoints. They serve consistently excellent coffee sourced from local Sway Coffee Roasters, and the bakery case is always tempting with sweet and savory treats.

They make their pastries and baked goods in-house, and it is nearly impossible to leave without one. My go-to order is a chocolate croissant with a cup of their Guatemala blend drip coffee. They also serve breakfast and lunch, so there is always something good to pair with your drink.

Their full coffee menu includes classic espresso drinks, drip options, and seasonal lattes that change throughout the year.

McLain’s has several locations around the metro. Their newest café in North Kansas City is a fantastic addition, but you will also find them in Waldo, Shawnee, South Overland Park, and just off 435 in Overland Park.

2. Messenger Coffee Co. – Big City Feel with Rooftop Views

Locations: Crossroads, Country Club Plaza, Kansas City International Airport

Messenger Coffee Kansas City is one of the most recognizable names in the local coffee scene. Their flagship café at 1624 Grand Boulevard in the Crossroads is a destination. The building spans three floors, with spacious seating, and huge windows. I love the rooftop patio that offers fireplace seating and city views.

They roast their coffee onsite, and you can see part of the roasting operation from the second floor. Messenger is known for its full lineup of espresso drinks, single origin pour overs, and rotating seasonal lattes. You will also find Ibis Bakery on the main floor, so you can pair your coffee with something fresh from the oven.

While the Grand Boulevard café is the most iconic, you can also enjoy Messenger Coffee at their Plaza and Kansas City International Airport locations. They also supply beans to many other Kansas City coffee shops, including Blackdog Coffeehouse in Lenexa and the Filling Station.

It is a beautiful space to spend the morning, and if you want to experience one of the most popular Kansas City coffee companies, Messenger is a must visit

3. Café Corazón – Latin Roots and Creative Sips

Locations: Crossroads, Waldo, Westport

Café Corazón is one of the most culturally rich coffee shops in Kansas City, with deep roots in Latin and Indigenous heritage. The murals, music, and menu all reflect a strong sense of identity and community. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and filled with heart.

In addition to traditional coffee drinks, they serve yerba mate, café de olla (a traditional Mexican coffee), and other Latin inspired specialties. I had a hard time deciding what to order, so I was happy to see they offer both coffee and mate flights. It was the first time I had ever seen a coffee shop do flights, and I absolutely loved it.

If you are hungry, do not miss their breakfast burritos. The food is as good as the drinks.

You can visit Café Corazón in Crossroads, Waldo, or Westport, and no matter which one you choose, it is a great place to try something new and delicious.

4. Blip Roasters –  Industrial Cool Meets Motorcycle Chic

Location: West Bottoms

Did you ever think motorcycles and coffee would go together? At Blip Roasters, they absolutely do. The motorcycle theme is more than just decor. They also sell motorcycle gear and merchandise.

Even if motorcycles are not your thing, this is a fun and unexpected spot to grab a great cup of coffee. They roast their beans onsite and offer a full menu of espresso drinks, drip coffee, and seasonal favorites.

Blip is located in a large industrial space with high ceilings and an open layout, giving it an inviting, creative energy.

It also doubles as a community gathering space. They host yoga classes, live music, underground poetry nights, and coffee education events. It’s a place where people come for more than just the caffeine.

Blip is one of those Kansas City coffee shops that leaves an impression, and I love going back for the atmosphere as much as the coffee.

5. Cafe Equinox – Caffeine in a Jungle Oasis

Locations: Shawnee, Overland Park, Liberty

Cafe Equinox might be one of the most unique coffee shops I have ever visited. Located inside Family Tree Nursery, this spot blends two of my favorite things: plants and coffee. Their motto, caffeine and chlorophyll, fits perfectly.

After ordering your coffee, you can wander through the nursery and find tables and chairs nestled among the greenery to sit and enjoy your drink. There is something about being surrounded by plants that is so relaxing.

Cafe Equinox serves a full menu of espresso drinks, drip coffee, and seasonal specials from Thou Mayest, a local coffee roaster. You will also find pastries, including gluten-free options, sourced from local Kansas City bakeries. Everything I have tried has been fresh and delicious.

I have visited the Shawnee location, and they also operate in Overland Park and Liberty, so no matter where you are in the city, there is a spot nearby to enjoy a coffee break in a tropical setting.

6. Bisou – A Little European Charm on the Westside

Location: Westside

Bisou is a quaint little coffee shop on Kansas City’s Westside that has real European vibes with simple, yet elegant décor. The spacious patio has plenty of outdoor seating and truly made me feel like I was back in Europe!

Bisou serves locally roasted coffee and a small menu of breakfast and bakery items. The food is fresh, and the coffee is consistently excellent. It’s a lovely spot for a slow morning or a mid-day reset.

If you are craving a calm, scenic patio and a European inspired setting with good coffee, Bisou is a must visit.

7. Splitlog Coffee – A Local Gem with a Rooftop View

Location: Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, KS

Splitlog Coffee caught my eye because of their rooftop seating, and once I visited, I knew it was a hidden gem. Located in the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, this shop has a relaxed vibe and a great view.

The area itself has deep roots, with old churches founded by Croatian, Slovak, and Irish immigrants, as well as dive bars, pop-up art shows, and lots of character. Splitlog fits right in. It is the kind of place where you can sip a quality cup of coffee, take in the rooftop view, and feel connected to a neighborhood with history.

The shop is casual and comfortable, with good coffee and a few breakfast options to round out your visit. It feels local in the best way.

If you are looking to explore something off the beaten path while still getting a great drink, this is a stop worth making.

8. The Roasterie – Kansas City’s Signature Coffee & Factory Tour

Locations: Southwest Boulevard, Brookside, Leawood, Woodside, State Line, inside Children’s Mercy Hospitals

The Roasterie is one of the most iconic names in Kansas City coffee. Known for its signature air-roasted beans and airplane logo, this local company has been a cornerstone of the city’s coffee culture for decades.

Today, The Roasterie has several café locations across the metro, but their flagship location on Southwest Boulevard is the one to visit first. You can’t miss it—there is a real airplane mounted to the roof.

Inside, there is a full café and roasting facility, plus a behind-the-scenes factory tour that I highly recommend! It costs just five dollars and gives a fun look at their process and story. Full disclosure, I have taken the tour several times and love bringing out-of-town guests to experience it!

Their menu includes classic espresso drinks, drip coffee, and signature specialties. My personal favorite is the Honeycomb Latte, which has just the right amount of sweet and smooth.

Whether you are a longtime coffee fan or just getting into Kansas City’s local scene, The Roasterie delivers great coffee and a memorable experience.

9. Café Ollama – Small Space, Big Flavor

Location: Westside

Café Ollama is a small but mighty coffee shop that brings authentic Mexican inspired flavors to Kansas City. I love how it blends cultural roots with coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.

Their signature drink is café de olla, a traditional Mexican coffee brewed with cinnamon, spices and piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar commonly used in Mexican coffees and baking).

Alongside the café de olla, the drink menu includes unique options like the La Tia Rosa mazapán latte and coffee flights that let you try both hot and cold versions of their specialties.

The staff is friendly and the artwork reflects the cultural story behind the café. On nice days, the patio is a great spot to relax and enjoy your drink.

Café Ollama is one of my favorite spots in Kansas City for coffee that feels both meaningful and memorable. It is a great place to meet a friend or enjoy a quiet coffee on your own.

10. Ten and Two Coffee – A Coffee Spot That Shifts Into Something More

Locations: Bonner Springs and Lansing

The Ten and Two Coffee shop in Bonner Springs is one of my favorite unexpected finds. Housed inside a beautifully renovated historic mill, the space shows off its industrial charm with exposed brick and high ceilings.

They serve a full menu of coffee, locally made pastries, and offer a huge covered patio with games that make it easy to linger a little longer. The café shares the building with Quentin’s BBQ and Sides and the Olde Mill Ice Cream Shop, so you can grab coffee, lunch, and dessert all in one stop.

The name comes from their connection to a local car club, who stores cars here and often hosts car shows at this location.

After dark, Ten and Two transforms into an evening hangout with craft cocktails and live music. It is one of the few places where you can enjoy a latte by day and a cocktail by night.

Their second location in Lansing offers the same easygoing charm. Ten and Two always keeps things interesting whether you are stopping in for a quiet morning or staying out a little later.

🌟Bonus Coffee Experiences in Kansas City

If you love coffee and want to experience Kansas City beyond the café counter, these two events offer something extra special.

Caffeine Crawl Kansas City

Held every spring and fall, the Kansas City Caffeine Crawl is a must for coffee lovers who want to go beyond their usual cup. The event features multiple routes across different parts of the city, each with four to five café or roaster stops. Every route is led by a dedicated guide, though participants drive themselves between locations.

At each stop, you will enjoy tastings, behind-the-scenes access, and conversations with café owners and baristas. It is a fantastic way to learn more about the craft of coffee, discover new shops, and experience the passion behind Kansas City’s coffee scene.

I have done the Caffeine Crawl several times and always leave feeling energized, inspired, and maybe a little over caffeinated. I learn or try something new each time and I usually leave thinking, ‘When can I do this again?’.
