The Sound of Music tour had been on my bucket list for years, and it was even better than I imagined. We took it as a day trip from Munich, determined to make the most of our time in Salzburg, and this experience did not disappoint. It felt like stepping into one of my favorite films brought to life, full of history, charm, and a little movie magic.
The Sound of Music was filmed in Salzburg, Austria, in 1964 with a crew of 250. This is the very same company, Panorama Tours, that transported the cast and crew to their filming locations!
We considered exploring the locations on our own, but after some research decided to join an organized tour. Although it’s a four-hour bus tour, I’m so glad we went that route.

Is the Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg Worth It?
Yes! I only had one day in Salzburg, so I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend four hours of it on a tour. In the end, I’m so glad I did.
Not only did I get to see some of the most iconic Sound of Music filming locations, but the tour also took me outside Salzburg to beautiful places I probably wouldn’t have visited on my own. The scenery, movie stories, and yes, even a little singing on the bus made it one of the highlights of my day.
If you’re a Sound of Music fan, I think it’s absolutely worth it!
About the Sound of Music
The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959 with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The story was inspired by the real-life von Trapp family, who fled Austria before World War II.
The film, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was released in 1965 and became one of the highest-grossing films of its time. It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Watching the movie has become a tradition for me, and I’ve seen it more times than I can count.
More than 60 years after the film was released, The Sound of Music remains a huge part of Salzburg tourism. And there’s even more coming for fans: a new Sound of Music Museum is expected to open at Hellbrunn Palace in fall 2026.
💡Fun Fact: The Sound of Music isn’t nearly as popular in Austria as it is in the United States, and many Austrians haven’t seen the movie.
Sound of Music Tour vs. Exploring on Your Own
You can visit many of the Sound of Music filming locations on your own, especially those in central Salzburg. However, some locations are spread outside the city and take more time and planning to reach.
I chose the tour because I only had one day in Salzburg and wanted to see as much as possible. Plus, our guide shared fun movie facts and behind-the-scenes stories I wouldn’t have known on my own.
If you have limited time or simply don’t want to worry about the logistics, the tour makes it easy.
The Original Sound of Music Tour by Panorama Tours
The Sound of Music tour runs twice a day at 9:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. It’s about four hours long and costs around 60 Euros. However, prices can change, so check current rates when booking. Transportation is by coach bus. It is highly recommended to purchase your tickets in advance, as this popular tour does sell out!
Getting There
The tour leaves from Panorama Tours Bus Terminal, Mirabellplatz/Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1, 5020 Salzburg. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early. I found it easy to reach from the train station. It’s about a 15-minute walk toward Mirabell Gardens.

Tour Stops
Mirabell Gardens & Palace
During the “Do Re Mi” sequence, Maria and the children danced atop the Pegasus Fountain and ran joyfully through the hedge tunnel. The song’s finale features Maria singing on the grand garden steps.
Also nestled within the gardens is the whimsical Dwarf Garden, where Maria and the children playfully tap the head of one of the charming statues. The Dwarf Garden is closed during winter months.
Mirabell Gardens is the final stop on the tour, but since it’s so close to the starting point, you can also arrive early and explore before the tour begins. Wander around, see the gardens, and recreate some of the famous scenes while you’re there.

You can also go inside the palace, which is now mostly administrative offices. Inside you can see the beautiful angel staircase and marble hall.
The palace is often open on weekdays and Saturdays. Times vary since these are working offices. The gardens are generally open from early morning until dusk, although some areas close during winter. Admission is free to both the gardens and the palace.

Schloss Leopoldskron
Schloss Leopoldskron was used for the lakeside exterior of the von Trapp family home in the movie and is now a luxury hotel.
As a result, this stop offers a scenic view of the estate from across the lake. From here, you can spot the iconic steps and balcony featured in several memorable scenes from the film.
Remember the Captain watching Maria from the balcony and the children falling out of their canoes into the lake after their fun adventures with Maria in town? These scenes were filmed here.
If you are a guest of the hotel you are able to see the inside, including the grand and ornate ballroom that inspired the elegant party scene in the movie.
Schloss Leopoldskron

Hellbrunn Palace
The gazebo featured in the “16 Going on 17” and “Something Good” scenes is located at the Hellbrunn Palace. Interestingly, this isn’t the gazebo’s original location. It was relocated after fans began trespassing on private property just to see it.
Access to the inside of the gazebo is restricted due to a past safety incident involving a tourist. Even so, it remains one of my favorite stops on the tour!
Although not a part of the movie, Hellbrunn Palace is famous for its trick fountains, which are open from late March to early November. There isn’t time on the tour to see the palace, but it’s worth a trip back if you have time.

View of St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgangsee
Along the route, the tour stops at a breathtaking vista point that overlooks St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgangsee from the opening scene of the movie. This was probably one of the best views of the Austrian Alps along the way.
I didn’t know we were stopping there, so it was a lovely, unexpected surprise.

Church Mondsee & Town Mondsee
Mondsee Church is the filming location for Maria and Captain von Trapp’s wedding in the movie. The church was founded in 748 and once housed a former monastery. Once inside the church, take your time to admire the stunning architecture.

This is the longest stop on the tour and gives you time to buy souvenirs, get a snack, and tour the church. We walked around town and visited a beautiful park with a lake and alpine views after touring the church.
Mondsee Church & Town of Mondsee

Along the way, our guide also pointed out the yellow wall Maria passes while singing “I Have Confidence” on her way to the Captain’s home, although it wasn’t a stop on the tour.
Sound of Music Locations the Tour Doesn’t Fully Cover
While the tour covers many of the most famous Sound of Music filming locations, you won’t get to fully explore all of them. A few you may want to explore on your own include:
Nonnberg Abbey: The real abbey where Maria was a novice and the setting for several scenes in the movie. The tour points it out, but you don’t stop to explore.
Residenzplatz: Located in Salzburg’s Old Town, this is where Maria sings “I Have Confidence” while making her way to the von Trapp home.
St. Peter’s Cemetery: The cemetery inspired the dramatic scene where the von Trapp family hides from the Nazis near the end of the movie.
Felsenreitschule: The beautiful theater used for the family’s performance before their escape.
Since I only had one day in Salzburg, I was okay with missing a few locations in exchange for seeing so much in just four hours. But I’d love to return someday and track down the ones I missed!
Tips Before You Go
A few things to know before taking the Sound of Music Tour:
Book ahead. The tour is popular, especially during the busy summer and Christmas seasons.
Arrive early. Give yourself plenty of time to find the meeting point and check in.
Dress for the weather. You’ll get off the bus at several stops, so bring layers and comfortable walking shoes.
Bring water and snacks. Four hours can feel long, although you’ll have a break in Mondsee where you can grab something to eat.
Save time for Salzburg. If you only have one day like I did, plan what you want to see in Old Town before or after the tour.
